Periodontal scaling is a dental manipulation that is carried out by a periodontist or professional hygienist and involves deep cleaning of hard calculus and plaque from the crown part of the tooth, its walls and gum part.

Plaque and calculus, in fact, are formed as a result of the accumulation and reproduction of bacteria, which then turn into the well-known dental plaque. After a certain time, plaque becomes dense and solid in structure. In this situation, it is no longer possible to get rid of calculus on your own.

The accumulated dental deposits cause inflammation of the gums, the formation of gum pockets, which can lead to complete tooth loss in the future. Here comes the professional hygiene (or in simple terms teeth cleaning by a specialist). One of the effective variants of such cleaning is periodontal scaling. This procedure is used both for prevention and in case of diseases such as gingivitis, periodontitis and periodontal disease.

The main advantages of this manipulation:

  • Prepares tooth enamel for other necessary dental procedures;
  • Reduces the risk of caries and other diseases;
  • Allows to stop and prevent periodontal disease and the development of certain pathologies;

There are 2 types of periodontal scaling:

  1. Mechanical: carried out with the help of special tools and during which the periodontist manually gets rid of accumulations of calculus from the surface of the tooth or its gingival part.
  2. Ultrasonic: is a safer and less traumatic method. Under the influence of ultrasound waves, all dental deposits are destroyed even from the most inaccessible places and at the same time it is absolutely painless for the patient. If necessary (in case of severe sensitivity), local anesthesia is applied.
There are 2 types of periodontal scaling:

* Usually, periodontal scaling can be completed by a periodontal dentist with a sandblasting. This polishing is characterized by the removal of dental deposits using a special jet with abrasive cleaning particles under pressure. This manipulation allows you to polish the tooth, to slow down and prevent the accumulation of bacteria on it in the future.

  • Preparation for such procedures as: prosthetics, installation of orthopedic and orthodontic constructions, whitening procedure, implantation.
  • Swelling of the gums, their bleeding or discoloration.

  • Bad breath or other symptoms of periodontal disease.
  • In case of already formed gingival pockets (loose fit of the gums to the tooth surface).

Differences between periodontal scaling and professional teeth cleaning:

  • Preventive cleaning of the oral cavity is recommended by the specialists of “Sa-Nata” once every 3-6 months, and the use of gingival scaling is necessary in case of serious problems: significant accumulation of calculus and plaque, formation of gum pockets, etc.
  • In case of already formed gum pockets, standard cleaning is not enough, only scaling will help to fully remove hard plaque and polish the root.
  • Scaling is much more time-consuming manipulation than professional oral hygiene.
