Sealing of fisurs of children's teeth

Sealing of fisurs of children's teeth

Such procedure as “fissure sealing” is not always heard by parents and is not very popular ... But in vain! Because this manipulation provides an important function - the preservation of teeth, and also helps the child to go through such a difficult period as a changing of teeth.

Fissures are natural recesses on the surface of a tooth. They might be in the form of small micro-slits and pits. They are the most vulnerable point of the chewing tooth. Food and plaque can accumulate in them, which, in turn, can harm the teeth.

Why are dental fissures needed?

Fissures are necessary for qualitative chewing of food, and they also provide teeth with tactile sensitivity.

Fissure sealing is a necessary preventive process, which implies the filling of the recesses of the chewing surface with a special sealed material.

Since fissures are quite difficult to access in their physiology, plaque and food very much like to accumulate there. These places on the surface of the tooth are difficult to clean. As a result, microbes multiply in such places very quickly and “willingly”, which leads to caries.

To prevent the appearance of caries, avoid serious manipulations and not succumb to the risk of losing teeth in the future, it is necessary to fill the fissures with hermetic material “closing” these recesses, which are favorite environment for the accumulation of food and plaque.

After fissure sealing, the chewing surface of the tooth becomes smoother and more even and ceases to be a favorable habitat for unnecessary accumulations of food and plaque.

It is in children that this procedure is in demand and necessary, due to the fact that they often have too deep grooves of the surface recesses, incomplete mineralization of the enamel and the initial stage of fissure caries.

The procedure of sealing fissures is absolutely painless for your child and does not cause any discomfort. This manipulation is an effective method of preventing the appearance of caries.

Sealing steps:

  1. Cleaning of fissures. At this stage, the specialist with the help of ultrasound (or by preparation) cleans all cracks and furrows from unwanted and excess deposits.
  2. Rinsing and drying of the recesses after cleansing.
  3. Degreasing the chewing surface of the tooth. This manipulation is carried out in order to provide hermetic connection of the surface and a special “sealing” material.
  4. Application and filling of fissures with a special hermetic material. Sealant can serve long enough - for 5 years.
  5. Strengthening the material with a special lamp.
  6. Polishing and grinding. Produced in order to provide convenience and exclude the feeling of foreign body on the surface of the tooth.

* It is completely normal for sealed material to fall out. This can happen as a result of occasional or poor-quality children's hygiene,  biting of solid food, and so on. To prevent this possible aspect, it is necessary to regularly visit the dentist for a check-up and professional hygiene (cleaning) of the teeth, and, of course, not to neglect the high-quality and regular home hygiene.

At what age should this procedure be performed?

At what age should this procedure be performed?

It should be noted that the fissure sealing procedure is carried out only on permanent teeth, especially in the first 2 years after they appeared. Since the tooth enamel itself will continue to strengthen for 3-5 years.

In most cases, the fissure sealing procedure is recommended during the following periods:

  • at 5-6 years, exactly at the time when the first permanent molars appeared (sixth teeth).
  • from 11 to 13 years, at the time when the child's seventh teeth appeared.
