Zirconia Crowns — Innovative All-Ceramic Restorations

Zirconia crowns are orthopedic restorations that restore the shape and function of a damaged tooth, even when standard reconstruction with filling or composite materials is no longer possible. Solid zirconia constructions are an ideal alternative to traditional ceramic crowns or porcelain veneers. They do not contain a metal framework, allowing for optimal depth and translucency that perfectly mimics a natural, healthy tooth. At the same time, they eliminate the risk of gum discoloration around the crown. Zirconia crowns represent the highest achievement in dentistry when it comes to achieving perfect aesthetics in single-tooth reconstruction. In modern dentistry, zirconium dioxide is often referred to as “white gold,” as it is considered the best material available today for fabricating dental crowns. A crown made from zirconium dioxide is highly resistant to various chewing loads and external factors, offers excellent aesthetic qualities, and provides exceptional durability. The installation of zirconia crowns—offered at an affordable price across the Sa-Nata clinic network—is recommended for those who dream of a perfect smile that is not only beautiful but also fully functional. They are also ideal for patients dealing with significant tooth discoloration, damage, or an overly tense bite.

Zirconia Crowns — What the Treatment Process Looks Like

Simplified Treatment Process:

First Visit:
After preparing the tooth for the prosthetic crown, the dentist begins reshaping it. The reshaping procedure is performed under general or local anesthesia and is completely painless for the patient. Then, the prosthodontist performs a 3D scan and sends the results to the dental laboratory.
Notably, our clinic network has its own digital dental laboratory “Sa-Nata Dynasty.” Having an in-house lab allows for unique quality control throughout every stage of crown fabrication.
The visit concludes with the fabrication of a temporary crown, which ensures both an aesthetic appearance and functionality until the final crown is ready. It protects the tooth and surrounding tissues from trauma and helps the patient adapt to the new bite.

Second Visit:
After a certain period, the prosthodontist removes the temporary crown and tries on the finished solid zirconia crown. Once the fit and aesthetics relative to the rest of the teeth are verified, the dentist cements the crown in place.
The lifespan of a high-quality zirconia crown is typically 15–20 years.

Key Advantages of Zirconia Crowns

  • Biocompatible and safe: contains no metal base and does not cause allergic reactions or irritation.

  • Color matching: the dentist can select a shade that perfectly replicates your natural tooth color.

  • No dark edges: unlike traditional crowns, zirconia crowns do not create gray or bluish gum lines.

  • Exceptional quality: zirconia crowns combine durability, strength, and a highly natural appearance.

In the past, the cost of zirconia crowns was very high, making them available only to a limited number of patients. Today, they are accessible to everyone who values natural beauty and the health of their smile.

How is a zirconia crown made?

Zirconia crowns, now more affordable at Sa-Nata clinics, are made using a high-quality material — zirconium dioxide. Thanks to its strength, durability, and biocompatibility, it is widely used in dentistry. Such constructions are produced in the following sequence:

  • For a zirconia crown, it is important to determine the degree of tooth damage and choose the optimal restoration method.

  • Preparation includes removing damaged tissues, shaping the required anatomical form for the restoration, and performing 3D scanning.

  • Using a digital intraoral scanner, an accurate 3D scan of the tooth is taken. Digital technologies make it possible to obtain a highly precise model, which significantly improves the quality of the restoration.

  • Based on the digital scan, a 3D model of the tooth is created. In modern clinics such as Sa-Nata, CAD/CAM systems (computer-aided design and manufacturing) are often used.

  • Using this 3D model, in our own digital dental laboratory “Sa-Nata Dynasty”, a zirconia blank is milled with extreme precision to achieve an ideal shape.

After milling, the blank is fired in special furnaces to give the material the required strength and stability. It is then adjusted to the shape of the tooth, checked for accuracy, and tested for bite comfort.

How are zirconia crowns processed and installed?

To enhance aesthetics, the zirconia crown is coated with a special ceramic veneer that imitates the natural color of enamel. The ceramic layer is applied to the base and then fired in a furnace. Once the construction is complete, the dentist installs it on the prepared tooth. If necessary, additional adjustments are made to ensure a perfect fit and maximum comfort for the patient.

Zirconia Crown on an Installed Implant

Zirconia Crown on an Implant: Features of Installation and Fabrication

A zirconia crown is one of the most popular dental restorations, especially when it comes to restoring teeth using implants. This material is known for its high strength, aesthetic appearance, and biocompatibility, making it an ideal choice for patients who wish to restore the natural look of their teeth.

Fabrication of a Zirconia Crown

The process of fabricating a zirconia crown begins with a thorough diagnosis. The dentist examines the patient and determines whether zirconia is suitable for the specific case. Then, an impression of the implant is taken to create an accurate model for the future crown. This can be done using digital technologies such as CAD/CAM systems, which ensure high precision and minimize waiting time. A zirconia crown is usually created in two stages. In the first stage, a zirconia framework is made, providing the structure with strength and durability. In the second stage, the framework is coated with a layer of aesthetic material to achieve the most natural color and translucency, closely resembling natural teeth. Modern technologies make it possible to achieve a perfect combination of strength and appearance.

Crown Installation

After the crown is fabricated, the dentist prepares the implant. It is essential that the implant is well osseointegrated — meaning securely fused with the bone tissue. This is crucial for the durability and stability of the crown. Before placement, final checks are performed to ensure a perfect fit. The installation of the crown on the implant is usually painless and does not require significant anesthesia. The dentist attaches the crown to the implant structure using special screws or dental cement, depending on the specific case and the patient’s preferences. After the crown is installed, it is important to follow the dentist’s care recommendations to ensure the longevity and beauty of the restoration.
