In diagnostics, a pantomogram or orthopantomogram (OPG) is a method of examining a panoramic image of all teeth, the intra-jaw bone area, the mandible, joints, and sinuses. A panoramic radiograph (“panorama” X-ray) is an image that shows four parts of the dental arch, divided into quadrants: right (R) upper and lower, and left (L) upper and lower. For easier identification, the teeth in such an image are numbered from 1 to 8, starting with the central ones in the middle of the image.
An orthopantomogram (panoramic image) covers 32 teeth in adult patients with a full dental arch. The teeth visible on a panoramic radiograph are numbered for diagnostic purposes. Numbers 1 and 2 in each quadrant are incisors. The element numbered 3 is called the canine. Teeth 4 and 5 on a panoramic radiograph are considered premolars, while 6, 7, and 8 are molars. The molar numbered 8 is referred to as the wisdom tooth.
Indications for performing an orthopantomogram in Kyiv are:
Dental and periodontal diseases (caries, periodontitis, endodontic problems related to root canal treatment) — a panoramic X-ray allows the assessment of carious lesions often invisible to the naked eye during a regular dental exam. The procedure also helps diagnose periodontal diseases and changes in tooth roots. Periapical changes can also be observed. X-ray imaging is an important first step in developing a specific treatment plan (including root canal therapy).Tooth extraction procedures — an orthopantomogram is especially recommended for surgical removal of wisdom teeth. It shows the tooth’s shape and its relation to adjacent teeth.Implant procedures — when placing dental implants, diagnostics help assess the conditions for implant placement.Orthodontic treatment — the examination is necessary for planning orthodontic treatment before installing orthodontic appliances.Treatment of maxillofacial injuries — the procedure is required in cases of root fractures or injuries to the upper and lower jaw.Oral infections — this diagnostic method helps detect the source of infection in the oral cavity.
An orthopantomogram (panoramic dental X-ray) is an examination that visualizes the anatomical structures of the facial skeleton — teeth, bone, and other structures. This diagnostic procedure is performed, among other cases, when planning:
conservative treatment;
prosthetics;
implantology;
orthodontic treatment.
An orthopantomogram is an image that provides a general assessment of the “state of health” of the teeth and helps identify retained teeth. It is also performed to prepare a patient for surgical dental procedures. Sometimes such an X-ray can reveal roots left after improper extraction, cysts, or even malignant formations.
This is a completely painless examination and does not require anesthesia.
For pregnant women, it is performed only if the benefits outweigh the potential risks to the developing child. You can schedule the orthopantomogram (panoramic X-ray) procedure directly at the chosen dental clinic, by phone, or by using the special form on the website.
