Implant-supported prosthetics is a method of dental restoration in which artificial teeth (crowns, bridges, or removable dentures) are placed on implants that are embedded into the jawbone. This method has many advantages and is highly popular in modern dentistry.

Here are the key aspects of implant-supported prosthetics:

Implant placement. The first stage is the insertion of the implants. Implants are metallic pins or rods that are placed into the jawbone. They create a strong and reliable foundation for future artificial teeth.

Osseointegration. After implantation, the implants must undergo the process of osseointegration, which means they become part of the bone tissue and integrate with it. This process can take several months and is crucial for ensuring implant stability.

Taking impressions / 3D scans. After osseointegration, the prosthodontist takes impressions of the patient’s oral cavity or, following modern protocols, performs 3D scanning to create customized dental crowns or other prosthetic elements in our laboratory.

Fabrication and installation of the prosthesis. Based on the impressions or 3D scans, as well as the treatment plan, dental crowns or other prosthetic components are fabricated in the lab. They are then installed onto the implants. The prosthesis can be either fixed (such as a bridge or crown) or removable (a removable denture supported by implants).

Adjustment and fitting. The specialist performs fitting and adjustments of the prosthesis to ensure proper alignment, comfort, and a correct bite.

Care and maintenance. After the prosthesis is installed, the patient is given recommendations for care and maintenance. This includes oral hygiene instructions and regular visits to the prosthodontist and implantologist for follow-up checkups.

Implant-supported prosthetics typically provide a high level of comfort, functionality, and aesthetics, along with long-term benefits. Implant prostheses can be recommended in cases of the loss of one or several teeth, or even complete tooth loss in the jaw.

Types of implant-supported dental prosthetics

Implant-supported prosthetics offer various options that can be selected depending on the individual indications and the clinical situation of the patient.

Here are some of the main types of implant-supported dental prostheses:

Dental crowns on implants. These are single artificial teeth placed on individual implants. They can be used to replace one or several missing teeth.

Bridges on implants. Implant-supported bridges consist of several connected crowns and are used to replace multiple adjacent teeth. Implants serve as anchors for the bridge, providing stability and functionality.

Removable dentures on implants. These are removable dentures that are attached to implants. They can replace all teeth in a jaw and offer excellent retention and comfort.

All-on-4 and All-on-6. These are treatment concepts in which all teeth in a jaw are replaced using only a few implants (4 or 6 per jaw). Fixed prostheses are attached to these implants, providing high stability and functionality.

“Teeth in a Day” prosthetics (Immediate or one-day implantation). This technology allows both implants and prostheses to be placed in a single day. It is especially beneficial for patients who need rapid tooth replacement.

Prosthetics on mini implants. Mini implants are thinner and shorter implants used for securing removable dentures. They provide good retention and comfort, particularly in cases where the patient lacks sufficient bone volume for standard full-sized implants.

The choice of a specific type of implant-supported dental prosthetics depends on many factors, including the condition of the patient’s oral health, the number of missing teeth, bone structure, and individual preferences. The dentist will perform an evaluation and provide recommendations to determine the best option for each particular case.

What are the features of implant-supported prosthetics?

Implant-supported prosthetics have several characteristics that make them an appealing and effective method for tooth restoration.

Here are some of the key features of implant-supported prosthetics:

High reliability and stability. Implants embedded in the jawbone provide a strong and secure foundation for dental prostheses. This ensures stable retention and functionality comparable to natural teeth.

Natural appearance. Dental crowns and prostheses placed on implants can be customized to match the color, shape, and texture of natural teeth. This results in a natural look, making the prostheses almost indistinguishable from real teeth.

Comfort and convenience. Implant-supported prostheses are generally more comfortable than removable dentures without implants. They do not slip, irritate the gums, or interfere with chewing and speaking.

Bone preservation. Implants help maintain bone tissue in the jaw. This prevents bone atrophy, which often occurs after tooth loss or prolonged absence of teeth.

Variety of options. There are many types of implant-supported prostheses, including crowns, bridges, removable dentures, and systems like “All-on-4” or “All-on-6.” This allows for selecting the most suitable solution based on each patient’s individual needs.

Long-term effectiveness. With proper care of implants and prostheses, patients can expect long-lasting results and satisfaction with their treatment.

Minimal impact on adjacent teeth. When implants are used, there is no need to grind or affect neighboring teeth, unlike in traditional bridgework supported by natural teeth.

Improved quality of life. Implant-supported prosthetics can greatly enhance patients’ quality of life by restoring chewing ability, improving speech, and rebuilding confidence.

Implant-supported dental prosthetics require several stages and time for completion, but their numerous advantages make them one of the most preferred methods of dental restoration for many patients.
