Braces are an orthodontic device designed to correct malocclusion, straighten teeth, and improve the aesthetics of a smile. Modern systems come in metal, ceramic, sapphire, and lingual versions, allowing you to choose the best option for each patient.

Braces are recommended for:

  • bad bite;
  • crowded teeth or large spaces between teeth;
  • misaligned teeth;
  • smile aesthetic concerns;
  • preparation for comprehensive orthodontic or orthopedic treatment.

Before braces are installed, the oral cavity is thoroughly prepared: cavities, inflammation, and gum problems are treated.

Stages of braces installation:

1. Teeth preparation. Teeth are cleaned of plaque, polished, and a primer is applied to protect the enamel and improve the adhesive bond.

2. Braces are bonded. Each bracket is secured to the tooth with a special dental adhesive. After bonding, each bracket is illuminated with a light to cure the adhesive.

3. Inserting the orthodontic archwire. An archwire is inserted through the bracket slots, applying pressure to the teeth to gradually move them. The archwire can be metal or flexible, depending on the stage of treatment.

4. Archwire fixation. The archwire is secured with ligatures (small elastic bands or wire loops) or self-locking clasps. Proper fixation ensures precise tooth movement and patient comfort.

5. Checking and adjusting. The orthodontist checks the correct placement of the brackets and archwire, adjusting the position if necessary for maximum effectiveness and comfort.

6. Patient instruction. The patient receives recommendations on caring for the braces, hygiene rules, diet, and what to do in the event of discomfort or breakage.

Care and Monitoring of Braces

After braces are installed, discomfort, irritation of the mucous membrane, and slight pain after arch adjustments may sometimes occur. Cracks in braces or adhesive detachment are rare, requiring an urgent visit to the orthodontist. Patients should brush their teeth with a special toothbrush, floss, and rinse. Hard and sticky foods should be avoided. Regular visits to the orthodontist (every 4-6 weeks) allow for arch adjustments, monitoring tooth movement, and promptly addressing problems. The duration of braces depends on the severity of the malocclusion, typically ranging from 12 to 24 months.

Brace installation is a comprehensive and effective procedure that allows you to align your teeth, correct your bite, and improve the aesthetics of your smile. Successful treatment depends on proper care, the orthodontist’s recommendations, and regular checkups.
